Description | As an attorney with Broude, Smith & Jennings, P.C., Kathryn has the privilege of representing a broad range of clients in the areas of business and commercial real estate law. In a small-firm setting, opportunities to first-chair deals present themselves earlier and more often, and Kathryn benefited from early experience running point on a variety of large transactions, including: sales of selected assets out of a Texas multifamily portfolio, aggregating to more than $65 million, and involving complex loan assumption and defeasance issues; a $29 million sale of a large multifamily property in Orlando, Florida, involving the release of municipal bond financing; and a $7 million stock and asset acquisition with respect to a North Texas outdoor advertising company and certain of its affiliated entities. As a subset of her commercial real estate practice, she has closed numerous sales, acquisitions and lease transactions for owners and operators of assisted living and skilled nursing facilities, and she is unashamed to admit that she enjoys getting lost in a good commercial lease (and considers it her mission to fix the bad ones). Kathryn represents both landlords and tenants in connection with office, retail, warehouse, industrial and other leases and finds that the perspective gained from representing landlords informs and enhances her representation of tenants, and vice versa. She particularly enjoys working with franchisees and helping them navigate the unique set of issues that come with being betwixt and between a lessor and franchisor. The product of a long line of scientists, mathematicians, engineers and artists, Kathryn is both a geek and a creative at heart, so she values opportunities to work with companies in the technology world and in scientific fields. While she enjoys the challenges inherent in closing large commercial deals, Kathryn recognizes that smaller projects can be as, or even more, rewarding, and she derives personal satisfaction from using the skills that she has developed in working on more high-profile matters in providing business start-ups and other entrepreneurial clients with a quality product at a competitive price. When not working or volunteering, Kathryn juggles the demands of raising two sons (The Swimmer and The Point Guard) with the realities of sharing a 1920’s era Tudor cottage (which seemed like a good idea at the time) with entirely too many cats and dogs. Fortunately, her law school sweetheart-turned-husband has proved an excellent partner in such regard. |
