DescriptionW. Gordon Kaupp joined the Arca Law Group in September 2013. He had previously worked at the Scott Law Firm in San Francisco and the Law Office of Mark E. Merin in Sacramento litigating a wide range of civil rights lawsuits involving employment discrimination, wage and hour violations, and police and government misconduct. Mr. Kaupp also worked at the Law Office of Dennis Cunningham, primarily litigating Section 1983 lawsuits against law enforcement officers for excessive force and other misconduct. He has also defended low-income families facing eviction, represented criminal defendants in trial court and on appeal, and represented prisoners in civil rights cases, at their parole suitability hearings, and on appeal challenging the denial of their parole. Mr. Kaupp has demonstrated exceptional trial and appellate skills. He acted as lead counsel in a five month trial in People v. Broderick Boys, a case challenging the imposition of a permanent gang injunction that significantly curtailed constitutional freedoms and stigmatized the largely Latino working class neighborhood of West Sacramento. Mr. Kaupp has tried multiple cases in state and federal courts. Mr. Kaupp authored the appellate briefs for Seymore v. Metson Marine, Inc., which resulted in a published decision reinforcing the protections of California’s labor laws. He is also Criminal Justice Act appellate panel attorney for the Federal Defender of the California Eastern District and a former appellate panel attorney for the First District Appellate Project for the California Courts of Appeal and a former appellate panel attorney for the Central California Appellate Program. Mr. Kaupp has authored appellate briefs in numerous appeals before the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, the New York Supreme Court – Appellate Division, First Department, and the California Courts of Appeal. Mr. Kaupp was admitted to the California Bar in 2003 and admitted to the New York Bar in 2013. He is a member of the National Employment Lawyers Association / New York (NELA/NY). Since 2003, he has been a member of the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild, and has also served on its Executive Board and on its Demonstrations Committee.
