Delakas is an attorney in New York City, where he concentrates his practice in the representation of individuals harmed by police misconduct and malicious prosecution, as well as criminal defense and DWI defense, and matrimonial law.Michael Delakas has worked in connection with law enforcement and the criminal justice system in New York in one way or another since 1987. Prior to entering law school, Michael served for ten years as an officer in the New York City Police Department. His tenure on the force included assignments in the 34th Precinct and in the 32nd Precinct in Harlem. After ten years on the force as an officer, Michael was promoted to Detective and assigned to the Organized Crime Control Bureau, Narcotics Division. Michael worked the Lower East Side as an undercover for three years buying drugs from street and mid-level dealers. He then stayed on in Narcotics as an Investigator.After retiring from the force, Michael spent seven years as a contract investigator for the United States Immigration Customs Enforcement Border Patrol and Personnel Management. He also worked as an armed bodyguard and in retail security and nightclub security, while at the same time attending law school at Hofstra University School of Law. His legal experience includes summer internships and externships with a criminal court judge, the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s office, and the Nassau County Prosecutor’s office, where he prosecuted his own cases as a third-year law student.Michael holds a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from City University of New York and a Master of Science from CUNY’s John Jay College of Criminal Justice, in addition to his Juris Doctor law degree from Hofstra. He is admitted to practice in the courts of the state of New York as well as the United States District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York.Michael’s involvement in pro bono (volunteer) legal services stretches back to law school, when he helped victims of domestic violence obtain orders of protection from family/criminal court. Today, Michael continues his community involvement and outreach helping indigent people obtain uncontested divorces in Queens County. He also serves as the legal counsel for the St. Paul Society, a fraternal organization of the New York City Police Department. |
