| Description | Prior to joining Whittel & Melton, Mr. Ezzell attended law school at the University of Alabama School of Law, and has served as a trial attorney with two Offices of the State Attorney and the Office of Regional Counsel since his admission to the Florida Bar in 2002. While working as an attorney, he also completed a Master’s degree in History from the University of Florida in 2015, with a concentration in 20thcentury American criminal justice. Over Mr. Ezzell’s career he has been published in peer-reviewed journals three times. As a practicing trial attorney for the past seventeen years, Mr. Ezzell has had the opportunity to handle every type of criminal litigation, from the smallest of misdemeanors to the most complex of felonies and homicides. In 2009, he was honored by the Gainesville Child Advocacy Center with their annual award for ‘Excellence in Service to Children’; and in the mid-2000s, when the State Attorney’s Office decided to make the shift to a ‘file less’/’paperless’ office, he was one of two felony attorneys selected to test-drive and troubleshoot the technology of that new system. Over his years of legal practice, Mr. Ezzell has handled over 140 jury trials and nearly 20 bench trials. During his work as a criminal trial attorney, he spent over eight years spent in the ‘Crimes and Women and Children’ division, and two years as the lead attorney in Levy county, Florida. All of his positions, as both a prosecutor and a defense attorney, have involved direct contact with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the Public Defender’s Office, the Offices of Regional Counsel, various private criminal defense firms, the Guardian Ad Litem services, and the Florida Department of Children and Families on a regular basis. Additionally, while serving as an Assistant Regional Counsel, he regularly handled and covered civil child dependency cases in Florida’s family law courts, and as a criminal prosecutor he regularly handled and attended various administrative hearings. Outside of the courtroom Mr. Ezzell has worked hard to continue an active pursuit of learning. This is evidenced not only through his 2015 Master’s degree in History from the University of Florida, but from his tenure as a law school instructor in the area of Civil and Criminal Trial Advocacy. From 2005 through 2010 Mr. Ezzell served as an adjunct professor of law at both the University of Florida and Florida Coastal Schools of Law, where he taught a Trial Advocacy course that covered both civil and criminal trial law and procedure. Additionally, while employed at the State Attorney’s Office he regularly lectured with the Florida Prosecuting Attorney’s Association, the University of Florida, and at the Santa Fe College Police Academy.
