Description | Helen Whelan joined Miller, Miller & Canby in 2012 as Principal to expand the firm’s Elder Law capabilities within the Estates & Trusts Practice Group. With more than a decade of experience advising families and individuals in planning for their futures, Ms. Whelan’s desire is to educate her clients so that they understand their estate plan. She works with families to meet their goals for their estate and carefully plans how the estate will be implemented both during their lifetime and after their death. As a Certified Public Accountant with a Masters in Tax, Ms. Whelan is uniquely qualified to assist her clients in accomplishing their goals. Ms. Whelan is sensitive to the needs of a family in crisis and counsels clients about elder law issues, including Medicaid qualification and asset protection. She also administers estates and trusts. Ms. Whelan received her J.D. from Catholic University, Columbus School of Law and subsequently obtained an LL.M. in Taxation from Georgetown Law with a Certificate in Estate Planning. In addition to being a lawyer, she is also a Certified Public Accountant. Ms. Whelan is currently in her second term as a Commissioner with the Montgomery County Commission of Common Ownership Communities (CCOC). The CCOC is composed of volunteer members that adjudicate disputes between homeowners and their condominium or homeowners associations. Ms. Whelan was recently appointed to the Board of Directors of Progress Unlimited, which provides services for adults with developmental disabilities, as well as 24-hour residential care and Adult Medical Day Care in its newly-renovated center. Ms. Whelan co-authored an article entitled ‘Planning Ideas and Considerations for Unmarried Couples’, which was published in the December 2011 edition of the Journal of Financial Planning’s Between the Issues. |
The firm has since 1983 developed a highly specialized practice throughout the State of Maryland and the District of Columbia, serving the needs of the elderly for estate and estate tax planning and Medicaid eligibility and planning. Besides direct client services, the firm also provides consulting services for other attorneys respecting Medicaid planning and eligibility.
